This past week I attended an AAUW (American Association of University Women) meeting. My sponsor, Debra invited me to hear Robb Wells, VP of Tourism for the Beaufort Chamber of Commerce. Thanks to Debra’s introduction I met Robb and spent a few minutes speaking with him before his presentation. The AAUW invites speakers and holds various events throughout the year. If you have a degree and want to be a part of an energetic group of women, think about attending a meeting.
On Thursday, local children’s writer Kami Kinard had a wine and cheese meet and greet for author, poet and artist Robyn Hood Black who recently moved to Beaufort. Robyn penned 2 books, Sir Mike and Wolves and has written for numerous publications. Her artwork is beautiful and I can’t wait to visit her studio in Beaufort. My friend Katherine Tandy Brown, freelance writer, teacher, and coach also attended along with many other local writers. Reconnecting with people I’d met in the past and making new friends that night made Kami’s party good for the soul; I hope we will all get together again soon. Thank you Kami for hosting!
Saturday, November 22, Mike and I participated in The Island Charities 5K run and 3K walk on Cat Island. The race started at 8:30 am. Dressed in jeans and a sweatshirt, the 40ish degree temperature made me feel like a cat pulled from a frigid river.
To keep my mind off the cold I walked around taking pictures. One shot is a t-shirt that reads, “Ooh Rah!! Parris Island, SC and shows a picture of a boat. I posted the picture at the bottom of this post. The shirt belongs to John Davenport who ran the race with his grandson. The Ooh Rah!! is his boat. How cool is that?
Once the race began it wasn’t too bad…. Oh, I lie, it was still too darn cold for me, but with my husband Mike’s encouragement and the help of the other women walking along beside us we finished without a problem. Then we cheered for others as they crossed the finish line. Other than the cold weather, I loved being a part of the race and I think we’ll do it again next year. Randy Wentworth, a retired Chief Warrant Officer and his wife Pam set up The Island Charities to help those who have a need in the community. For more information visit them at TheIslandCharities.com
Next week is Thanksgiving. Last year I wrote a blog post about my first Thanksgiving as a Marine wife. Click here to read the post. This year as you prepare your turkey with the traditional foods your family loves to eat, remember our Marines and other service members who cannot be home with their families for the holiday. Happy Thanksgiving!
